Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
